In 2006 the BANKSETA and its Canadian partner, The Immersion Lab organized an action learning program which took twelve Senior Executives from the Banking Sector in South Africa to Canada for six weeks for an accelerated leadership development program.  Designed specifically to support the ambitious objectives of the Financial Services Charter,  the six week Canadian module combined academic learning, onsite workplace days with leading Canadian Banks, “outside in meetings”, networking, and participation in socio-cultural events.

Phase 1 focused on the 26 leaders of tax and consisted of leadership competency identification, gap analysis, individual and team skills training and coaching, and linking to meaningful business outcomes. Although not yet fully completed, preliminary data suggests positive changes on all success measures.

* Daerim Construction & Engineering, Hyeon-Cheol Bong, Professor, Chonbuk National University and President, Korean Action Learning Association, South Korea
From 2002, the S. Korean company, Daerim, has tried to transform its 3 SBUs (strategic business units) into learning organizations using an Action Learning approach. Under the strong sponsorship of top management, the company trained over 200 internal facilitators (in large part, managers), who play the role of learning coaches for the action learning teams (over 300 in this year) and try to help them to solve their operational, tactical, and strategic problems. Approximately 80% of all employees participated in the action learning activities in 2005. In the period from 2002 to 2005, the total sales volume of this company increased 60%. In addition, a learning culture has been established in the organization. This presentation will provide a detail description of this transformation process and a systematic analysis of key success factors as well as the power of Business Driven Action Learning Approach in building learning organizations.
